Twendulkar

Hello fellow readers,

This post will contain Parthisms on SRT (Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar).

Sachin Tendulkar has been a gem for Indian Cricket. He is the best Indian cricketer if not the best cricketer of all time. Cricket in India is not a joke. The pressures and the money especially with the advent of IPL is tremendous. He has converted, as he says, every "Stone into Milestone". But Sachin Tendulkar is now more than an Indian, he is a proud citizen of the world. Children of Potchefstroom in South Africa to children in Melbourne, Australia want to be like him. If a company like opus is doing your biography, you know you are special.

People talk about his charisma, his temperament, humbleness and achievements, which are not meager by no stretch of imagination, but today, I would like to talk to you about his entertainment value. Why if Tendulkar gets out, millions of televisions go off? Why would a person like to watch him? Why does he still represent India at large, from rich to poor, from north to south? Which innings of Sachin defines him? Which innings of Sachin that I repent missing the most?

There is only one man in India that causes so much passion and no controversy, i.e. Sachin Tendulkar. For twenty years, he has provided premium class entertainment, from his first ton at Old Trafford in 1990 through Sharjah, to his recent 177 at Hyderabad. He is a genius par excellence. I watch him personally, because one hardly gets to see a perfect technique with an aggressive mindset. Yes, you have the Pontings and the Laras who are good but they are fallible due to their rare weaknesses. They both have a weakness to poke at the ball earlier in the innings especially the one that is just tailing away. Sachin on the other hand, does not have a weakness that has persisted through his career. He has worked on it and with hard work, those are not present today.

During the 1995-1998 era, Sachin made piles of runs and by that time, he had become a household name, right across India. From Chennai's Chepauk, to Sydney's SCG, he had made a century in almost all the famous cricket grounds in all conditions. In India, from a person living in slums to a person in a mansion knew Sachin and what he had achieved. The phrase, Alaa Re Alaa, had been associated with Sachin. His craze and his run-making had reached such a high level that it was said that, if Sachin is gone, India is gone. Even with such pressures, he was achieving runs and milestones as if there is no pressure. To me, as a viewer, I looked at Sachin and wanted him to make a ton every innings. There was a point in Indian cricket, where the whole Indian Team was on one side and Sachin was in a league of its own. He had become and still is India's most prized possession.

Sachin has played many innings that makes one go speechless. The innings that that defines Sachin Tendulkar is the one he played in Sydney in 2004 where he scored 241. That innings stands out as the definition of Sachin is because before that innings, he was getting out at covers or driving through the cover, cover-point region. He then decided that he will not play a single drive through covers. In the whole of innings of 241, Sachin Tendulkar did not play a single cover drive. He left all the balls that were there to drive, which he certainly could have driven them through and collected an easy four. This shows the mental approach of the man towards the game. This mental resilience with a mixture of great technique.

The innings that I miss not seeing the most, is the innings that Sachin played during the Perth Test 1990-1991. Many people, like Richie Benaud, say that that was the greatest innings that they have seen. That was the innings that announced, a Mumbaikar on the the world map and if I get a tape of that innings, I am going to cherish that for the rest of my life.

Well this not all I that I have say about Sachin, but I only have limited time.

Next time, look for the view of traditionalist on the state of cricket. The advent of T-20 and modern era. How test matches can be improved. The mess of future tours program and I will take a crack at solving the problem.

Thanks for tuning in. Until next time, this is Parth Taneja signing off and hope you liked the Parthisms.
